Verifone helps improve tourism in Florence by launching the Firenzecard with Linea Comune. The contactless-enabled card gives access to city museums, temporary exhibitions and public transportation for 72 hours.

Linea Comune manages local services for the Florence District and started the Firenzecard project in 2011 to control the artistic heritage of the city, famous all over the world with millions of tourists visiting yearly.

CHALLENGE
The city of Florence is famous all over the world for its artistic heritage and cultural sites, which are scattered all round the city district. The company who manages local services for Florence - Linea Comune – wanted to simplify and streamline each tourist’s visit, allowing them to avoid single tickets sales, long queues to access museums and exhibitions. Linea Comune was searching for a simple and smart technology solution, which would be in line with other main tourism cities of the world and also be economically sustainable.

SOLUTION

Verifone worked with Linea Comune to create the Firenzecard, a contactless card specifically for visitors to Florence. Firenzecard enables tourists for 72 hours to have one central point of access to all museums and monuments, city bus and tram tickets. Once the tourist is in the first museum, they can pick up and activate the card by tapping on Verifone’s touch screen color VX 680. The same device manages sales and card replacements and integrates electronic payment applications.

RESULTS
The solution currently has enabled 1,5 million individual visits to cultural sites, with 180.000 activated cards covering around 60 museums in the district. By tapping the contactless card, tourists can access the chosen museum or monument without waiting in a queue. The solution is constantly growing, collecting new artistic sites, focusing also on the smaller ones and giving to the tourists a positive customer experience.
